Inserting Footnotes in Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word has an inbuilt system that allows you to insert footnotes easily.

  1. Click where you want to insert the reference footnote (usually after the text that is a quote or paraphrase of someone else’s work).
  2. On the 'References' tab, select 'Insert Footnote'.
  3. A footnote number will appear in the text, and a corresponding number will appear at the bottom of the page. Enter the relevant reference information in the footnote.

Your Assessment Handbook provides guidance on the specific details you should include in your footnotes to ensure proper citation.
